iPhone users must have noticed that their device doesn't charge above 80 percent. In other cases, users have even reported their iPhones stopping charging at that rate.

This sometimes makes users panic. Because they thought there was something wrong with their iPhone. This condition can be caused by built-in features if the user does not tamper with the device. But why does Apple limit iPhone charging to a certain percentage or lower the maximum charging capacity?

Over the past few years, the smartphone industry has advanced rapidly. Especially about the charging speed of the device. In the mobile market, smartphones like the OnePlus 10R offer 150W charging rates, but the latest iPhone 13 Pro Max only supports 27W wired charging. While this may sound disappointing, there is a good reason behind all of this.

Optimized Battery Charging feature on iPhone and iPad

On the official support page, Apple outlines a feature called Optimized Battery Charging. It is available on iPads and iPhones running iOS 13 and up. Basically, this feature observes the user's charging pattern and slows the charge by above 80 percent when predicting that the iPhone will be connected to the adapter for a long time.

As a result, if users plug in their iPhone at regular times, it's likely that the battery won't charge more than 80 percent at normal speed. In addition, the iPhone also displays a full charge time.

To get out of this situation, users should head to Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Optimized Battery Charging and disable it.

High Temperatures Cause iPhone To Limit Charging At 80 Percent

However, another situation is when the iPhone or iPad stops charging at 80 percent. On its support page, Apple recommends using iPhone and iPad in ambient temperatures from 32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

For example, a user leaves his iPhone in the car on a hot, sunny day. As the temperature in the car rises, the internal temperature of the iPhone battery also rises. When this happens, iOS implements a security mechanism that stops charging altogether or limits battery capacity to 80 percent. Well, when the iPhone temperature drops and returns within operational limits, the iPhone will return to its standard capacity.

Similarly, when charging a smartphone battery at too high a speed, the temperature rises beyond normal. In the long term, battery health can deteriorate.

So, users who leave their iPhone or iPad connected for a longer duration and users who operate the device in a hot environment are more likely to face this issue, wherein their device stops charging up to 80 percent.

In general, users should avoid such situations as they negatively impact battery life. If users want their iPhone and iPad devices to last longer, they can avoid charging to 100 percent or using them below 20 percent.
