WhatsApp has added a feature to transfer a user's conversation history from Android to iPhone. Previously, the company had allowed users to transfer chats the other way around, from iPhone to Android.
The new functionality was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a Facebook post. The initial leak of the feature, which was launched in beta for now, was revealed by WABetaInfo.
The update addresses a longstanding WhatsApp issue. The Menlo Park-based app has historically made it difficult to transfer chats between the two mobile operating systems.
Granted, it's very easy to move conversations from one iOS device to another or from one Android device to another, but generally it's not possible between two different operating systems.
According to The Verge, the transfer process only works on new or factory reset iPhones and uses Apple's existing Move to iOS app for Android.
How to Transfer WhatsApp Chats from Android to iPhone
During setup on iPhone, select the “Move data from Android” option, then follow the steps in the Android app. Once iPhone is fully ready, open WhatsApp and sign in using the same phone number. The chat history of the pre-existing Android user will appear.
To start the transfer, users need to be running at least Android 5 or higher on Android devices and iOS 15.5 on iPhones. Unfortunately, if the user already has a pre-existing iOS chat history, the imported Android history will mask it.
